In the latest outbreak of violence in the troubled Manipur region, 2 people have died including a 31 year old woman who was killed in a gun and bomb attack in Imphal West District on Saturday night. The attack also resulted in injuries to her eight-year-old daughter, two policemen, and three other civilians. According to the police, the attack in Koutruk, Imphal West, was executed by Kuki militants who employed advanced drones to launch multiple RPGs. While drone-delivered bombs are often seen in warfare, the recent use of drones to target civilians raises serious concerns about border security and the frequency with which the conflicted region is receiving external ammunition. Earlier the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has said that cases related to smuggling of weapons in the Northeast has revealed that hawala channels are being used to transfer payments for smuggling of arms and ammunition by a Myanmar based network into Manipur, which signifies that India’s internal conflicts are being impacted by external forces.
