On 10 September 1965, during the Indo-Pakistani War, brave Indian Army soldier Abdul Hamid was martyred in the Battle of Asal Uttar. Serving with the 4 Grenadier Regiment, Hamid earned the posthumous Param Vir Chakra for his extraordinary bravery. On 8 September, when the Pakistani Army launched an attack on Asal Uttar with American Patton tanks, Hamid was stationed in the Khemkaran sector. By the end of that day, he had destroyed two enemy tanks and damaged four more. The battle intensified on 10 September, during which Hamid destroyed seven Pakistani tanks using his gun-mounted jeep. His heroic actions earned Asal Uttar the nickname “tank graveyard” for the Pakistani forces. Unfortunately, while pursuing retreating troops, Hamid’s jeep was hit by a shell, leading to his martyrdom. His contributions were so significant that his story is integral to the 1965 war narrative.
