On Wednesday night, decorators were seen removing tents, bamboo sticks, and pedestal fans from the protest site in front of Swasthya Bhavan even as the doctors protests continued. Now, protestors claim that external pressure is leading the decorators, who had installed the fans for them, to now take them down. A junior doctor said, ‘It could be an effort to demoralise us but we would like to say clearly that for a protest, we don’t need all this. We can protest from anywhere and in any possible way.”
The decision to continue the protest and cease work after a six-hour meeting with the government was announced by the junior doctors. Despite the verbal assurance of the government, the doctors show disappointment in their demands not being considered in the minutes of the meeting. Debashish Haldar, a significant figure in the protest, said, ‘We remain hopeful for a written directive that formally acknowledges our demands while we appreciate the government’s verbal commitments. Until then, we will maintain our present course of action’.

In the meeting, the Chief Secretary requested the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front (WBJDF) to submit the details of four to five junior doctors as representatives in the proposed Special Task Force (STF) for further discussions. He also repeated the government’s request for the doctors to resume work immediately. The WBJDF started a sit-in protest outside Swasthya Bhawan on September 10. Following a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee last Monday, the doctors expressed partial satisfaction with the result and requested further discussions. The second round of talks with Chief Secretary Manoj Pant took place on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of India said that the CBI was investigating whether anyone else was involved in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata last month. After assessing the CBI’s most recent status report on the inquiry’s progress, the Bench chaired by CJI DY Chandrachud said that disclosing the line of investigation would compromise the probe.
