On Friday, the Supreme Court looked for a report from the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court over the social media clips about comments made allegedly by a judge during the course of hearing cases. Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda, during the contract of judicial proceedings said, ‘The attention of the court has been drawn to media reports related to certain comments which have been made by a judge of the Karnataka High Court’.
A five-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrahud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy ordered, ‘We have requested the learned Attorney General of India and the Solicitor General to assist this court’. The bench added, ‘At this stage, we request the registrar general of the High Court of Karnataka to submit a report to this court after seeking administrative directions of the Chief Justice in regard to the subject matter which is being referred to’.
Taking suo motu cognisance of the matter, CJI D Y Chandrahud said, ‘The reason why we have come in a combination of five judges is that our attention has been drawn to certain video clips about certain remarks by a Karnataka High Court judge during the court of hearing. We will ask the Register General of the High Court to send us a report and possibly with your assistance lay down some guidelines on observations in the course of hearings and draw the issues now that social media is now so prominent in observing proceedings in court, commenting on that”. The bench directed, ‘This exercise may be carried out in the next two days and the report may be submitted to the secretary general of this court in the meantime”. Recently, some clips of the judge making the comment during a hearing went viral on the social media.
