On Saturday, Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi took oath as the youngest Chief Minister of Delhi during a ceremony at the Raj Niwas. Five other newly appointed ministers, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Gopal Rai, Imran Hussain, Kailash Gahlot, and new Sultanpur Majra MLA Mukesh Ahlawat were also sworn-in to the Delhi Cabinet.
Earlier this week, Arvind Kejriwal handed over his resignation as CM to Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, Atishi presented a letter saying she had been elected as the leader of the AAP Legislature Party. Saxena proposed September 21 as the day for holding the CM-designate’s swearing-in ceremony to the President and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Kejriwal did not have any portfolio assigned to him. However, AAP leaders said this was unlikely to be the case with Atishi. A party leader said, ‘The top leadership has made it clear that Atishi has to focus on governance. She is expected to retain key portfolios such as finance, education, PWD, and power. While Arvind Kejriwal will focus on politics and poll campaigns, the new Cabinet has a lot of work to do’.
Notably, assembly polls in Delhi are scheduled for February, but Kejriwal has demanded that they be held in November along with the Maharashtra election. On Friday, the Supreme Court granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has been jailed for the last six months in the alleged liquor policy scam. The chief minister was granted bail for a few days two months ago ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections.
