Over 36.93 % Voter Turnout Recorded Till 1 PM In Jammu & Kashmir Phase 2 Elections

On Wednesday, the second phase of voting on 26 seats in six districts for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections started and will conclude at 6pm. A voter turnout of 36.93 % was recorded till 1 PM 10.22 % voting has taken place till 9 am. Security has been tightened in key constituencies such as Rajouri, Poonch and Reasi.

Notably, more than 2.5 million voters will decide the fate of 239 candidates, including 79 in the Pir Panjal region of Jammu during the second phase of elections. This is the first assembly election being held in Jammu and Kashmir in 10 years, after the abrogation of Article 370.

According to the election commission of India, the first phase of voting was held on September 18 across 24 constituencies in seven districts. The third phase will take place on October 1, after which counting of votes will be held on October 8. The first phase of elections recorded a voter turnout of 61.13 %, which was held in 24 constituencies in seven districts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted on X (formerly Twitter), “Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweets, “Today is the second phase of voting for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. I appeal to all voters to cast their vote and play their important role in strengthening democracy. On this occasion, I congratulate all the young friends who are going to vote for the first time.”

Prominent candidates of the second phase include former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, JKPCC President Tariq Hamid Karra and BJP Jammu and Kashmir Chief Ravinder Raina. Tight security arrangements have been made in all the six districts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Security forces have also been deployed at the polling stations. Soldiers have been deployed at every nook and corner. Three out of the six districts, Reasi, Rajouri and Poonch, have been witnessing continuous terrorist attacks for the past three years.
