Vitthalbhai Patel, born on 27 September 1873 in Gujarat, was the elder brother of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and a prominent leader in India’s freedom struggle. A brilliant lawyer and social reformer, he pursued legal studies in London and later joined the Indian National Congress in 1915. He played a key role in the 1918 special session of Congress in Bombay and became President of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1925. Along with Chittaranjan Das and Motilal Nehru, he co-founded the Swaraj Party to resist British rule. Patel passed away in Geneva on 22 October 1933, and his body was later cremated in Bombay. To honor his contributions, the Gujarat Assembly in Gandhinagar was named Vitthalbhai Patel Bhavan in 1978.
