The central government has announced an increase in minimum wage rates by up to Rs 1,035 per day through a revision in the Diwali Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA). It focuses to help the workers, especially those in the unorganised sector, improve their living standards.
Notably, it will be effective from October 1, 2024. The new wages will benefit workers in various sectors including building construction, loading and unloading, watch and ward, sweeping, cleaning, housekeeping, mining and agriculture. These sectors are classified under central sector establishments. The minimum wage rates are structured according to skill levels, unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled and highly skilled and are segregated by geographical areas classified as A, B and C. Under the new wages for Sector A, unskilled workers in sectors such as construction and cleaning will earn Rs 783 per day, which is Rs 20,358 per month.
Semi-skilled workers will now get Rs 868 per day or Rs 22,568 per month, while skilled and clerical workers will get Rs 954 per day, which will be Rs 24,804 per month. Armed surveillance and ward personnel as well as highly skilled workers will get Rs 1,035 per day, which will be a total of Rs 26,910 per month.
The Labor Ministry said in its statement that the Central Government has announced an increase in the minimum wage rate by revising the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) as an important step to support workers, especially those in the unorganized sector.
