On Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced the killing of top Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during a targeted airstrike in Beirut. The IDF has eliminated the top command of the Iranian-backed group. The attack was carried out by Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets on Hezbollah’s central headquarters. The headquarters was reportedly underground under a residential building in the Dahieh area.
Hezbollah’s southern front commander Ali Karki was also killed in the attack. In a post on social media platform X, the IDF said, “Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world. The Israeli army confirmed that Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Hezbollah terrorist organization and one of its founders, was killed along with Hezbollah’s southern front commander Ali Karki and additional Hezbollah commanders.”
The attack was carried out after Israel received accurate intelligence that senior Hezbollah commanders were present at the location, who were actively planning terrorist activities against Israel.
The IDF said in a statement, “During Hassan Nasrallah’s 32-year reign as Secretary General of Hezbollah, he was responsible for the murder of numerous Israeli civilians and soldiers and for planning and carrying out thousands of terrorist acts.” The IDF said that the Hezbollah terrorist organization, led by Hassan Nasrallah, joined the Hamas terrorist organization in the war against Israel on October 8. Since then, Hezbollah continued its frequent and unprovoked attacks on Israeli civilians.
In Beirut, Israel targeted Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah with an airstrike on the group’s headquarters, the biggest attack on the Lebanese capital in almost two decades and a major escalation of a conflict that threatens to engulf the Middle East. Spokesman Daniel Hagari said, ‘The Israel Defense Forces carried out a precise strike on a command center of the Iran-backed militant group that was located under residential buildings, and is still assessing the results’. Israel believes that Nasrallah was at the site of the attack, as per Israeli official who asked not to be identified discussing sensitive information. The Hezbollah leader’s whereabouts couldn’t immediately be verified.
