This Day in History | Indian Army’s Peacekeeping Mission in Sri Lanka | Grand Complex Inauguration

On October 11, 1987, the Indian Army launched Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force’s efforts to restore peace during the ongoing civil war. The operation aimed to disarm militant groups, particularly the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), which had been demanding an independent state for Tamils in northern and eastern Sri Lanka since 1983. On October 11, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the extended ‘Mahakal Lok’ complex of the renowned Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
