Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of the major significant Hindu festivals celebrated across the country to mark the win of good over evil. The occasion highlights the triumph of righteousness. According to the Hindu calender, This day usually falls on the 10th day of the Ashwin or Kartik month, according to the Hindu calendar.

Dussehra falls on the 10th day in Ashwin/Kartik month and Dussehra will be celebrated with lots of joy across India on Saturday/

As per the DrikPanchang, here are the timings for several rituals and ceremonies:

Dashami Tithi begins at 10:58 am (October 12, 2024).
Dashami Tithi ends at 9:08 am (October 13, 2024).
Shravana Nakshatra begins at 5:25 am (October 12, 2024).
Shravana Nakshatra ends at 4:27 am (October 13, 2024).
Vijay Muhurat from 2:02 pm to 2:49 pm (October 12).
Aparahna Puja from 1:16 pm to 3:35 pm (October 13.)

This day is celebrated across the country to commemorate Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana narrated in the Ramayana. According to the Hindu epic, Lord Rama, the Prince of Ayodhya, rescued his wife Sita following she was kidnapped by Ravana. On this day, Lord Rama killed the demon king and it became a symbol of the victory of good over evil.

Vijayadashami also marks the day Goddess Durga defeated buffalo demon king Mahishasura. This is central to the Navratri festival and ends with Dussehra, representing the win of truth and righteousness. The festive occasion of Dussehra is observed with diverse customs across various states in the country.

In north India, many states witness the dramatic re-enactment of the Ramayana which usually lasts for 10 days and concludes with the burning of the effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhkaran and his son Meghnad. In a few states, especially West Bengal, Dussehra coincides with Durga Puja’s conclusion. In cities across the state, beautiful pandals are set up showing idols of Goddess Durga. It ends with the immersion of these idols in rivers or ponds, which marks the symbolic return of the Hindu deity to her celestial abode.
