On October 14, 1956, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, accompanied by 365,000 supporters, converted to Buddhism, having previously announced his intention to leave Hinduism on October 13, 1935. Ambedkar, the principal architect of the Indian Constitution, dedicated his life to combating casteism and societal inequality. On October 14, 1964, Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent efforts in fighting for racial justice during the civil rights movement
