Two accused of violence during Durga Puja procession in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh were shot dead in an encounter, police said on Thursday. Police said that two accused Sarfaraz and Faheem, accused of killing 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra in Durga Puja procession on October 13, were shot dead while they were fleeing to Nepal.
The encounter took place near Handa Basehari area of Bahraich near Nepal border. Sarfaraz and Faheem have been shot in the leg. Both the accused are sons of Abdul Hameed, the main accused in Bahraich violence case.
The accused injured in the encounter have been referred to the district hospital. A total of five people were arrested after the encounter on Thursday. Meanwhile, Rukhsar, daughter of landlord Abdul Hameed in Bahraich, spoke out after her father was accused of firing at Ram Gopal Mishra. He said that the UP Special Task Force (STF) arrested her father, his two brothers and another youth at around 4 pm on Wednesday evening.
Her husband and brother-in-law were also taken away by the STF. He said that we have not received any information about them from any police station and we fear that they may be killed in an encounter. Hundreds of people protested after clashes between the two groups during the Durga idol immersion procession on Sunday.
Violence broke out over playing music during the procession, in which Ram Gopal Mishra died and many others were injured. Clashes took place when the procession was passing through Mahsi subdivision of Bahraich. The procession was pelted with stones and bullets were fired. More than 50 people have been arrested so far in the Bahraich violence case.
