Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for Russia to attend the 16th BRICS summit. During his visit, he will also hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of the BRICS group and other invited guests. Prime Minister Modi is going on the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Notably, this is his second visit to Russia this year.
The BRICS summit will be held on 22-23 October in the Russian city of Kazan. This is the first summit following the expansion of the organization. BRICS is an important group bringing together the major emerging economies of the world. Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia and UAE have joined this organization in 2024. Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov said that his country is looking forward to welcoming Prime Minister Modi along with 40 other leaders in the BRICS summit.
Alipov said that new members are expected to join BRICS as this expansion will strengthen this organization as an important platform to advance the interests of the Global South. It is noteworthy that Russia is currently the President of BRICS. It started as BRIC when four countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China – came together.
In 2010, South Africa also joined it, following which it was named BRICS. In 2023, this organization expanded further. Alipov has said that a large number of countries have shown interest in joining it. Russian President Vladimir Putin may also discuss further promotion of Indian films on the occasion of his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Such indications were given by President Vladimir Putin in a global press conference in Moscow last week. It is noteworthy that various Bollywood films from Raj Kapoor’s Awara and Mithun Chakraborty’s Disco Dancer to Shahrukh Khan’s Pathan are very popular among the people of Russia. Putin, while talking to a group of foreign journalists, said that he feels that Indian films are more popular in Russia than anywhere else.
Putin said that there is a special TV channel in Russia. It always shows Indian films and he also described the marketing of Indian films in Russia as an issue that needs to be discussed. In the same sequence, he also mentioned the Indian pharmaceutical manufacturing sector and the automotive sector. Putin said that cinema products and the film industry are part of the economy and should be properly regulated.
