On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed for Russia to attend the 16th Brics Summit in the city of Kazan. The Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. PM Modi is also likely to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as hold bilateral talks with leaders from the other Brics member countries.
In a statement, PM Modi said that ‘India values the close cooperation within Brics which has emerged as an important platform for dialogue and discussion on issues concerning the global developmental agenda, reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic cooperation, building resilient supply chains, promoting cultural and people to people connect’.

He said his visit to Kazan would also further reinforce the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. The summit comes following the ongoing global unrest, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the Middle East crisis. India’s Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar, emphasised the country’s role as a strong advocate for peace and conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy.
‘The issue has been discussed and spoken about. India has consistently held the view that the concerned parties need to engage and find resolution to the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy’, he said.
The BRICS summit will be held on 22-23 October in the Russian city of Kazan. This is the first summit following the expansion of the organization. BRICS is an important group bringing together the major emerging economies of the world. Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia and UAE have joined this organization in 2024. Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov said that his country is looking forward to welcoming Prime Minister Modi along with 40 other leaders in the BRICS summit.
Alipov said that new members are expected to join BRICS as this expansion will strengthen this organization as an important platform to advance the interests of the Global South. It is noteworthy that Russia is currently the President of BRICS. It started as BRIC when four countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China – came together.
