The festival of Diwali this year coincides with Amavasya—the new moon phase, which starts that afternoon. Diwali is considered the festival of lights, it is celebrated to celebrate the return of Lord Shri Ram, Mother Sita and Lakshman to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Ayodhya was decorated very beautifully on the arrival of the Lord.
The people of Ayodhya gave a grand welcome by lighting lamps. In this happiness, the festival of Diwali is celebrated with great pomp every year on the new moon day of the month of Kartik. According to another story, Lord Krishna killed the demon king Narakasura with the help of his wife Satyabhama. Narakasura was cursed to be killed by a woman. That day was the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month.
People celebrated Deepotsav in the joy of getting freedom from the terror and atrocities of Narakasura. Diwali was celebrated the next day. A story of Diwali is also related to the Pandavas. The Pandavas suffered the pain of exile. After this, the entire city was illuminated in joy when they returned home and from then Diwali started.
Diwali is also associated with Samudra Manthan. During this time Maa Lakshmi was incarnated. Mata Lakshmi is considered the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Along with lighting lamps in their homes, we also worship Maa Lakshmi. This is also a major reason for celebrating Diwali.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted on X, ‘Many happy wishes to the countrymen on Deepawali. On this divine festival of lights, I wish everyone a healthy, happy and prosperous life. May everyone prosper with the blessings of Maa Lakshmi and Lord Shri Ganesha’.
