The United States authorities have alerted the Mumbai Police about the presence of Anmol Bishnoi, the younger brother of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. The US alert said that Anmol is on US soil and this has led the Mumbai police to start the extradition process. Anmol Bishnoi is implicated in a series of high profile cases. The Mumbai police had last month filed a petition in a special court seeking permission to begin the extradition proceedings of Anmol Bishnoi. They informed the court about their intention to bring back Anmol to India.
Anmol’s name cropped on two occasions in recent times. First for the firing incident outside the house of Salman Khan and next following the murder of NCP leader Baba Siddiqui. The National Investigation Agency had last week announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for information relating to Anmol. The NIA said that Anmol had 18 cases registered against him, including one where he is alleged to have provided weapons and logistics to support the accused who killed Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala in 2022.
A Red Corner Notice had also been issued against Anmol Bishnoi. An official tells that they gather more information from the US on Anmol. We have just been alerted that he is on US soil, but it is unclear if he is in the custody of the authorities over there, said the official.
After the special Court of Mumbai allowed the police to process the extradition, the officials filed documents with the Ministry of Home Affairs. Now the Ministry of External Affairs will coordinate with the US authorities to bring Anmol back.
Last month after India withdrew its diplomats from Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had alleged that agents of the Indian government were collaborating with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang to spread terror in Canada. India called this statement baseless, while rejecting all allegations.
In 2022, the Bishnoi brothers were accused of being part of a conspiracy to raise funds and recruit youths for acts of terror in Delhi and other parts of the country. Lawrence Bishnoi has been arrested and is presently lodged in the Sabarmati jail in Gujarat.
