A chargesheet will be filed in Sealdah court on Monday against the civic volunteer, the prime accused in the rape and murder of a female doctor in the RG Kar Hospital case. This will mark the beginning of the judicial process in the case. The first chargesheet in the case was filed by the CBI last month in which the civic volunteer was named as the prime accused.
The names of former principal of RG Kar, Sandip Ghosh and the then officer of Tala police station, Abhijit Mandal, have also been included on charges of tampering with evidence. On August 9 this year, the body of the female doctor was recovered from the seminar hall on the fourth floor of the emergency department of RG Kar Hospital.
The same night, the Kolkata Police arrested the accused civic volunteer. The investigation of the case was handed over to the CBI. On October 7, 58 days later, the CBI filed a chargesheet in which the accused has been held guilty on the basis of strong evidence related to the crime. A total of 11 evidences have been obtained against the accused in the investigation, which include witness statements, video footage, forensic and scientific reports.
According to the CBI, the accused civic volunteer was seen walking in the corridor of the hospital in a T-shirt, jeans, helmet and headphones in the CCTV footage of the incident spot. The footage records the time of 4:03 am on August 9, when the incident took place. It has also been said in the charge sheet that the mobile location of the accused was also near the hospital that night.
The DNA of the accused found on the body of the deceased female doctor, blood stains on her clothes, hair recovered from the scene matching with the hair of the accused and Bluetooth earphones being connected to it are among the major evidences. The CBI also said that there are injury marks on the body of the accused which were caused due to the resistance of the female doctor on the night of the incident.
The forensic report of the time of the incident also revealed that the injuries present on the body of the accused are recent. The forensic report also made it clear that the clothes of the deceased were forcefully removed, which made the involvement of the accused even more clear. Kolkata Police had claimed that the arrested accused had confessed to the crime.
However, the accused’s lawyer told the court that his client is innocent and has been framed. The CBI also said that the accused has tried to mislead the investigators and there are contradictions in his statements. After the court’s order, a polygraph test of the accused was also conducted. In this test, the accused was asked 10 questions, in which he denied involvement in the crime every time and said that he had gone to the hospital to see his friend’s brother.
