The Election Commission has changed the voting dates related to by-elections on 14 assembly seats of three states. Voting will be held on these seats on November 20 instead of November 13. The seats on which the by-election date has been changed are as follows – Palakkad in Kerala. Dera Baba Nanak, Chhabbewal (SC), Gidderbaha, Barnala in Punjab. Mirapur, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair (SC), Karhal, Shishamau, Phulpur, Katehri and Majhawan in Uttar Pradesh.
The Election Commission said that it has received representations from various recognized national and state level political parties (including BJP, Congress, BSP, RLD) and some social organizations to change the date of voting in some assembly constituencies with by-elections on November 13.
There will be large scale social, cultural and religious programs on that day. This may cause inconvenience to a large number of people, create various system related problems and reduce voter participation during voting. After considering these factors and representations, the Commission has decided to change the date of voting on 14 seats from 13 November (Wednesday) to 20 November.
Notably, on 15 October, the Election Commission had announced by-elections for 48 assembly constituencies and 2 parliamentary constituencies in 15 states. In this, the date of voting for all the by-elections except Nanded Lok Sabha seat of Maharashtra and Kedarnath assembly seat of Uttarakhand was fixed as 13 November (Wednesday).
