Labour Party leader and former Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam has won a historic victory in Mauritius’ parliamentary elections. In the elections held on November 10, the current Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth’s party Socialist Movement could not even open its account.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Navin Ramgoolam on his win. This information has been given in the news of Mauritius’ news website Le Mauricien. In this election, Ramgoolam’s Labour Party’s ‘Alliance du Changement’ alliance has won all 62 seats.
Jugnauth’s alliance Lelep has not won a single seat. Prime Minister Jugnauth said that he did whatever he could to take the country forward but the voters decided to make the other party victorious. All the voters deserve congratulations for this. Notably, Navin Ramgoolam was the Prime Minister from 1995 to 2000 and from 2005 to 2015.
Jugnauth and Ramgoolam both come from families that dominated Mauritius’ politics after independence from Britain in 1968. 77-year-old Ramgoolam is the son of Sivasagar Ramgoolam, who brought independence to Mauritius. Ramgoolam will become Prime Minister for the third time.
India has strong relations with Mauritius. The main reason for this is the dominance of the population of people of Indian origin. Presently, 70 % of the population of 12 lakhs are people of Indian origin. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mauritius’s future Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam on his historic election victory.
Prime Minister Modi wrote on X on Monday, “Had a warm conversation with my friend Ramgoolam, congratulated him on his historic election victory. I wished him great success in leading Mauritius and invited him to visit India. I look forward to working together to strengthen our special and unique partnership.”
