On Wednesday, the Madras High Court strongly reprimanded the DMK government for removing a statue of “Bharat Mata” from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office and also ordered the state government to return the statue to the national party.
The Madras High Court said that it is not the state’s business to control matters inside a private place. Justice Anand Venkatesh of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court said that I have no doubt in my mind that the administration has removed the statue of Bharat Mata from a private property possibly due to pressure from somewhere else.
It further added, “This act is extremely reprehensible and should never be repeated in future. We are living in a welfare state which is governed by the rule of law. Therefore, such arbitrariness can never be tolerated by a constitutional court exercising its jurisdiction under Article 226 of the Constitution of India”.
The property for the BJP office was purchased in Virudhunagar district in 2016, after which a statue representing Bharat Mata holding a flag in her hand was also installed. The state government had argued that they had issued a notice to the BJP based on the guidelines of the High Court order in 2022.
It was said that no new statue should be installed for any leader, and statues that have a tendency to cause disturbance should be shifted to other places. To maintain peace and harmony in the society, the statue was removed and kept safe in the Revenue Department office.
