For the past few days, Manipur has been on a boil as the state continues to grapple with violence; an indefinite curfew has been imposed in Imphal and internet has also been suspended. The situation in Manipur further worsened following a headless body of a 2-year-old Meitei boy and his grandmother who were held hostage, was found in a river. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called for a security meet which is scheduled to take place on Monday.
On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the security situation in Manipur and directed the top officials to take all possible steps to ensure peace in the Northeastern state, according to the media reports. Shah held the meeting soon following he returned from Maharashtra after cancelling his election rallies there. Shah is expected to hold another detailed meeting with top officers on Monday and take further steps.
He has also cancelled all rallies in poll-bound Maharashtra amid surging violence in the state of Manipur. The already volatile situation worsened after a headless body of a 2-year-old Meitei and his 60-year-old grandmother was found in a river in Manipur’s Jiribam. The bodies of the toddler and his grandmother were found in a decomposed state, a week following they were abducted from a Meitei relief camp by the Kuki militants.
On November 11, the Manipur Police claimed 10 suspected militants were killed in a fierce gunfight with security forces after insurgents in camouflage uniforms and armed with weapons fired indiscriminately at Borobekra Police Station and an adjacent CRPF camp at Jakuradhor in Jiribam district. Hours later, suspected militants allegedly abducted six civilians, including women and children, from the same district, police had claimed.
On Saturday in a fresh violence, three women and three children were killed by militants in Jiribam district following which the residences of three state ministers and six MLAs were attacked earlier. Enraged people torched the houses of PWD Minister Govindas Konthoujam at Ningthoukhong, Hiyanglam’s BJP MLA Y Radheshyam at Langmeidong Bazar, Wangjing Tentha’s BJP MLA Paonam Brojen in Thoubal district and Khundrakpam’s Congress MLA Th Lokeshwar in Imphal East district, the officials said.
