Russia’s Air Force said in a statement that Russia fired a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in an attack on Ukraine. According to the media reports, the RS-26 Rubezh missile, with a range of 5,800 kilometres, was fired by the Russian Air Force. The missile was not carrying any nuclear warhead. Notably, this was the first known use of an ICBM by the Russian Air Force.
Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February 2022, did not comment immediately on the Ukrainian Air Force statement. The launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), with a range of thousands of kilometres, came days following Ukraine fired US and British missiles at targets inside Russia earlier this week.
In its statement, the Ukrainian Air Force didn’t specify the kind of warhead the missile had or the exact type of missile that Moscow launched. There was no suggestion it was nuclear-armed. ICBMs are strategic weapons designed to deliver nuclear warheads and are an important part of Russia’s nuclear deterrent.
Earlier on Wednesday, Ukraine fired British-made ‘Storm Shadow’ missiles, striking targets deep inside Russian territory, marking a significant escalation in the conflict that has now lasted 1,000 days. Before this, Ukraine also fired six US-made ATACMS missiles at Russia’s Bryansk region, just days following the US President Joe Biden eased restrictions on Ukrainian use of American-made weapons in the war.
A war broke out between Russia and Ukraine in February 2022, after the former invaded several Ukrainian territories.
