Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited the Indian community in Guyana to participate in the Maha Kumbh and Pravasi Bharatiya Divas to be held in India in January 2025. He called the members of the diaspora “Rashtradoot” i.e. ambassadors of India’s culture and values and urged them to play a big role in strengthening the ties between the two countries.
“Despite being across the ocean, our cultural bond with Mother India is strong,” he said. The Prime Minister addressed a gathering of the Indian diaspora at the National Centre in Georgetown. The event was attended by President Irfaan Ali, Prime Minister Mark Phillips and other dignitaries. The Prime Minister was given an exceptionally warm welcome on his arrival at the venue.
PM Modi underlined India’s rapid progress and transformation, particularly in the areas of technology, infrastructure and sustainability. He highlighted achievements such as financial inclusion, women-led growth and inclusive growth. Reflecting on the special India-Guyana relationship, he highlighted that several new agreements have been signed during his historic State visit and these will further strengthen cooperation in the areas of food security, defence, energy cooperation and climate change action.
The Prime Minister thanked President Ali for his hospitality and for conferring on him the ‘Order of Excellence’, Guyana’s highest national award. He dedicated the honour to the special bond of friendship between India and Guyana, which he said is based on shared heritage and familial ties. Reflecting on the history of India-Guyana ties, he praised the resilience of the community, its cultural richness and its role in shaping Guyana’s destiny.
