On November 28, 1890, India’s great social reformer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule passed away in Pune. Born on April 11, 1827, Phule fought against casteism, gender inequality, and ignorance. He dedicated his life to uplifting the oppressed and marginalized communities. In 1848, Phule and his wife Savitribai established India’s first girls’ school in Pune, defying social norms of the time, and educating nine students from different castes.
