Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah inaugurated the 59th DGsP/IGsP Conference 2024 on Friday in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the proceedings on the second and third days of the Conference. The conference, held in a hybrid format, is attended in person by the DGsP/IGsP of all States and UTs, as well as heads of the CAPFs/CPOs, with officers of various ranks participating virtually from across the country.
The National Security Advisor, Ministers of State for Home, and the Union Home Secretary also took part in the discussions. During the inauguration, Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah conferred Police Medals for Meritorious Service to officers of the Intelligence Bureau and released the Ministry of Home Affairs’ book on ‘Ranking of Police Stations 2024’. He also presented trophies to the three best police stations.
In his inaugural address, Shri Amit Shah congratulated the police leadership for the smooth conduct of the General Elections 2024 and the seamless rollout of the three new Criminal Laws. Shri Amit Shah expressed satisfaction with the significant achievements that have improved the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the North-East, and in states affected by Left-Wing Extremism.
The Union Home Minister stated that the three new Criminal Laws have transformed the ethos of India’s criminal justice system from being punishment-oriented to justice-oriented, emphasising that that the spirit of the new laws is deeply rooted in Indian tradition. He underscored the role of the security establishment in realising Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047 and transforming the nation into the third-largest economy by 2027.
The Home Minister noted that the focus should be on emerging security challenges along the Eastern border, immigration, and trends in urban policing. Shri Shah called for initiatives towards a zero-tolerance strategy plan and actions to implement this policy. Over the next two days of the Conference, the country’s police leadership will outline a roadmap to address existing and emerging national security challenges, including Left-Wing Extremism, Coastal Security, Narcotics, Cyber Crime, and Economic Security. The progress in implementing the new Criminal Laws, along with initiatives and best practices in policing, will also be reviewed.
