Damascus: The strong hold of rebels in Syria has shocked Iran. It has started evacuating its military officials and embassy personnel from Syria. Iran has been helping Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in every way for almost 13 years. This unexpected move by Iran has increased President Assad’s concern.
According to The New York Times, Iran on Friday started evacuating its military officials, soldiers and embassy personnel from Syria. These include top commanders of Iran’s powerful Quds Forces. This forces is the external branch of the Revolutionary Guards Corps. All these were helping President Bashar al-Assad to remain in power. What is important is that Iran has used Syria as a major route to supply weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon.
According to officials, Iranians started leaving Syria on Friday morning. Iranian and regional officials said the Iranian embassy and Revolutionary Guards bases in Damascus have been ordered to be evacuated. Some embassy staff immediately left for Iran. Iran has arranged planes for some of them and road transport for others. They are being sent by cars to Lebanon, Iraq and Syria’s Latakia port.
