Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai, Hindu Munnani state president Kadeswara Subramaniam, and several others were arrested by the DMK government in Coimbatore last evening following a protest rally. The demonstration was against the actions of certain political outfits that allegedly glorified SA Basha, the convict in the 1998 Coimbatore serial bomb blast, who recently passed away due to age-related ailments.
The protesters also condemned the state government’s decision to allow his funeral, attended by a large number of people, primarily Muslims, in sensitive areas of the city. The rally, supported by various Hindu organisations, demanded accountability from the government, accusing it of endorsing individuals responsible for the deadly terror attack that claimed 58 lives. Despite being organised on short notice, the protest drew several thousand attendees.
K Annamalai, addressing the crowd, stated, “Coimbatore is a peace-loving city that suffered a devastating attack in 1998. To glorify a terrorist is an insult to the victims and their families. We demand accountability from the state government.” Aravinth Easwaran, in a post on social media, claimed that the car bomb explosion that occurred in Coimbatore was not an accident, as suggested by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and he police. Easwaran, citing intelligence sources, alleged that the explosion was the result of a suicide bombing attempt, intended to target a crowded area near a popular textile showroom.
According to him, the bomb prematurely exploded after the vehicle navigated a speed breaker Easwaran criticised the state government and the police for downplaying the incident, describing their claims of an LPG cylinder explosion as a deliberate attempt to cover up the truth. He further accused the Tamil Nadu CM and police of failing to acknowledge the suicide bomber’s motives, which were linked to a terrorist plot.
