Dhaka, 23 December (HS): Former Attorney General of Bangladesh and Civil Aviation and Tourism Advisor to the Interim Government AF Hasan Arif was buried at Mirpur Martyr Intellectuals Cemetery at 10:30 am on Monday. He passed away on Sunday. A day of state mourning has been declared in Bangladesh today in his honor.
According to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, the late Hasan Arif was buried in the presence of family members including his son Muaz Arif and other prominent personalities. Arif breathed his last at Labad Hospital in the capital Dhaka on December 20 at the age of 83.
Senior Supreme Court lawyer AF Hasan Arif was born in Kolkata in 1941. He completed his secondary and higher secondary education from St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata. After this, he obtained a bachelor’s degree and LLB from Calcutta University. He moved to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) after enrolling as an advocate in the Calcutta High Court in 1967. He started practising in the Dhaka High Court in 1970.
Hasan Arif served as assistant attorney general from April 1982 to August 1985 and as deputy attorney general from August 1985 to March 1996 during the rule of military dictator HM Ershad. He later served as attorney general during the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami coalition government from October 2008 to January 2009. He served as legal adviser to the caretaker government led by Fakhruddin Ahmed. The former attorney general represented Mohammad Yunus in several cases.
