New Delhi, 27 December (HS): After the death of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, senior Congress Party leader and his colleague Jairam Ramesh remembered him by writing a very emotional post on social media. Jairam Ramesh wrote, “An extremely full and extraordinarily distinguished life has come to an end. Chief Economic Adviser, Finance Secretary, RBI Governor, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Finance Minister and Prime Minister of India.
An alumnus of both Oxford and Cambridge. Winner of the prestigious Adam Smith Prize at Cambridge in 1956. Soft-spoken, quiet and always dignified, he was a man of unshakable resolve. He was the technocratic transformative force of the Indian economy through his 1991, 1992 and other budgets. His prime ministership saw revolutionary legislation relating to rural employment, tribal rights, reservation for SCs, STs and OBCs, primary education, food security and land acquisition. The Indo-US nuclear deal was a landmark, enhancing India’s global standing. His prime ministership saw the highest GDP growth rate in the country’s history.”
Jairam Ramesh further wrote, “He was a gentleman at heart, and had no malice or animosity towards anyone. He believed in and followed the politics of dialogue, consensus and accommodation even in difficult situations. Humility and honesty were his hallmarks. Those who wanted to defame him showed their true face. Many of the initiatives he took as Prime Minister were publicised, broadcast and projected as the contribution of his successor. But Dr Singh never paid any attention to this and always behaved with his characteristic smile. He recruited me in the Planning Commission in September 1986 and since then it was my good fortune to be closely associated with him for the next 38 years. In his own unique and distinctive way, Dr Manmohan Singh has left his indelible mark on our history.”
