In a step towards preparing for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2028, the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has greenlit a comprehensive development project along the banks of the Kshipra River in Ujjain. The project involves constructing a 29-km-long pathway and multiple ghats, with an estimated budget of Rs 771 crore, aimed at managing the anticipated surge in devotees during this grand religious event. State Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya announced the details of the initiative, emphasizing its importance for the Kumbh Mela, which occurs once every 12 years. “A 29-km-long pathway will be constructed between Shani temple and Nagda bypass.

This decision has been taken to provide an easy passage for the visitors,” he stated. The pathway will run along the right bank of the Kshipra River, ensuring a smooth flow of millions of attendees expected during the festival. The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is projected to see around two crore visitors each day, making it one of the largest religious gatherings globally. To accommodate such numbers, the construction of new ghats is planned, with special provisions for saints from all 13 Akharas.

These ghats will not only serve as bathing areas but also as points for various spiritual activities. In addition to the pathway and ghats, the state government is undertaking several other infrastructure enhancements to bolster Ujjain’s readiness for the event. Last month, a significant investment was approved for road connectivity, including a four-lane highway project costing Rs 2,312 crore between Indore and Ujjain. This comprises the Rs 1,370 crore Indore-Ujjain Greenfield Road and the Rs 239 crore Indore-Depalpur Road, aiming to improve access to Ujjain from one of Madhya Pradesh’s largest cities.

The infrastructure development doesn’t stop at roads; there are plans to expand and modernize facilities for saints and devotees alike. Inspired by the setup in Haridwar, new ashrams and .dharamshalas are slated for development in Ujjain. These will provide accommodation and facilitate spiritual practices for the pilgrims.

Moreover, to further ease the journey of attendees, a metro line connecting Indore and Ujjain is in the planning stages, promising to transform the travel experience for millions during the Kumbh Mela. The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is not just a religious congregation but a significant cultural and economic event for Madhya Pradesh. With these extensive preparations, the state government aims to not only uphold the spiritual significance of the Kumbh but also ensure safety, comfort, and convenience for all participants.
