Bhubaneswar, 9 January (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention here, warmly welcoming delegates and members of the diaspora. Emphasising India’s growing global role through its achievements and prospects, the Prime Minister stated, “Today’s India not only firmly asserts its own position but also strongly amplifies the voice of the Global South.”
He highlighted the unanimous support for India’s proposal to grant the African Union permanent membership in the G-20, reaffirming India’s commitment to “Humanity First.” Expressing heartfelt gratitude to the Indian diaspora, Shri Modi thanked them for enabling him to hold his head high with pride on the global stage. He noted that over the past decade, he has met numerous world leaders, all of whom praised the Indian diaspora for their social values and contributions to their societies.
“India is not just the mother of democracy; democracy is an integral part of Indian life,” exclaimed the Prime Minister. He observed that Indians naturally embrace diversity and seamlessly integrate into the societies they join, respecting local customs and traditions. Modi remarked that Indians serve their host countries with honesty, contributing to their growth and prosperity while always keeping India close to their hearts. He added that they celebrate every joy and achievement of India with great enthusiasm.
The Prime Minister highlighted the historical significance of the day, marking Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India in 1915 after his extended stay abroad. He reflected on the celebratory mood across the nation, noting upcoming events such as the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj and festivals like Makar Sankranti, Lohri, Pongal, and Magh Bihu. He acknowledged the added vibrancy of the diaspora’s presence in India during this festive time.
PM Modi emphasised the special significance of this PBD edition, which is held shortly after the birth centenary of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose vision laid the foundation for PBD. “Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has evolved into a key institution strengthening the bond between India and its diaspora,” he stated, adding that the convention celebrates India’s culture, progress, and connection to its roots.
Speaking about Odisha, Shri Modi praised its historical and cultural treasures, including the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, the Sun Temple at Konark, and ancient ports such as Tamralipti, Manikpatna, and Palur. He highlighted Odisha’s historical maritime links, commemorated by the Bali Yatra festival, and acknowledged Dhauli’s legacy as a symbol of peace, where Emperor Ashoka embraced non-violence.
The Prime Minister urged the audience to draw inspiration from Odisha’s message of peace, stating, “The future lies in the teachings of Buddha, not in war.” Shri Modi expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Indian diaspora, whom he considers ambassadors of India. Acknowledging their global contributions, he noted their adherence to values and respect for local traditions, which enhance India’s reputation worldwide.
He highlighted India’s rapid progress, noting the lifting of 250 million people out of poverty in a decade, the rise to the world’s fifth-largest economy, and advancements in renewable energy, aviation, and technology. The Prime Minister expressed confidence that India would soon become the third-largest economy.
The Prime Minister celebrated India’s achievements, including the Chandrayaan mission, advancements in manufacturing, and global recognition of Digital India. He emphasised India’s growing role in amplifying the voice of the Global South, exemplified by its initiative to include the African Union in the G-20.
Shri Modi encouraged the diaspora to leverage India’s progress, engage in its growth story, and promote Indian culture and heritage worldwide. He urged them to reconnect with their roots by exploring smaller towns and villages in India, highlighting the potential of heritage tourism. The Prime Minister announced several measures to enhance diaspora engagement, including expanded eligibility for OCI cards, the establishment of new embassies and consulates, and improved consular services. He called for the documentation of inspiring stories from the diaspora, particularly from the “Girmitiya” communities, and suggested initiatives like the establishment of university chairs and world conferences dedicated to diaspora heritage.
He encouraged the younger generation of the diaspora to participate in programmes like “Bharat Ko Janiye” and “Study in India” and to spread awareness of India’s history and achievements in their host countries. Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to making India a developed nation by 2047. He urged the diaspora to support local Indian products, promote heritage, and plant trees in their mothers’ names as part of environmental initiatives.
“India is now recognised as a Vishwa Bandhu,” exclaimed the Prime Minister, urging the diaspora to strengthen this global connection by increasing their efforts. He suggested organising award functions in their respective countries specifically for local residents. The Prime Minister noted that these awards could be presented to prominent individuals in various fields such as literature, art and craft, film, and theatre. He encouraged the diaspora to honour achievers with certificates, with the support of Indian embassies and consulates, which he noted would enhance personal connections and emotional bonds with local people.
Emphasising the significant role of the diaspora in globalising local Indian products, Shri Modi urged them to purchase “Made in India” food packets, clothing, and other items, whether locally or online, and to include these products in their kitchens, drawing rooms, and as gifts. He remarked that this would be a substantial contribution towards building a developed India.
The Governor of Odisha, Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, the Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Mohan Charan Manjhi, Union Ministers Shri S. Jaishankar, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Shri Pralhad Joshi, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Shri Jual Oram, and Union Ministers of State Sushri Shobha Karandlaje and Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, along with other dignitaries, were present at the event.
