London, January 10 (HS) : Premier League club Everton has sacked its coach Sean Dyche. The club made the announcement on Thursday.
The club said in a statement, “Everton Football Club confirms that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his position as first team manager of the senior men’s team with immediate effect.” The statement said that Dyche’s assistants Ian Vaughan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have also left the club.
Dyche left his post after a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth, which left Everton in 16th place in the Premier League, although the timing of the move is surprising, as Everton has to play Peterborough in the third round of the FA Cup on the same evening. Former player Leighton Baines, who currently coaches Everton’s under-18 team, has been put in charge temporarily, with the club announcing it is beginning the search for a permanent replacement.
Dyche, 53, steps down after nearly two seasons after replacing Frank Lampard, with Everton mired in the relegation zone and he made it to safety in the 2022-23 season, finishing 15th last season.
While Everton’s defence has been solid this campaign, it has struggled to score goals, scoring just 15 times in 19 league games.
The sacking comes as the Friedkin Group completes its takeover of the club, which will move to a new 60,000-seat stadium in the summer.
