Bhubaneswar, 11 January (H.S.): Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the second edition of the ‘Kapilash Half Marathon’ on Saturday, organised by Tata Steel Meramandali, in the serene and green environment of Kapilash Wildlife Sanctuary. He praised the initiative as a commendable effort to raise awareness about elephant conservation and environmental protection.
The Minister expressed his pleasure in participating in the event, which was jointly organised by the District Administration and Tata Steel Meramandali, and he officially flagged off the marathon. He emphasised that such events play a vital role in fostering social awareness regarding the protection of Kapilash’s rich biodiversity and ensuring the safety of elephants.
The participants, ranging from students to senior citizens, showcased widespread enthusiasm for the marathon. Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Fit India Movement, this marathon aims not only to promote a healthy lifestyle and fitness but also to raise awareness about environmental conservation and the potential for tourism development.
The Kapilash Half Marathon is anticipated to establish Kapilash as a prominent destination for global tourism and marathon enthusiasts.
Highlighting the cultural significance of elephants, or Gajaraj, the Minister noted their unique place in India’s ancient traditions, culture, and spirituality. Elephants are symbols of heritage, and it is essential to protect them and maintain harmony between humans and elephants. The marathon, organised by Tata Steel Meramandali, is a commendable initiative toward these goals.
As a tourism-centric area, Kapilash requires concerted efforts to enhance its infrastructure and facilities for visitors. The Minister urged everyone to take collective responsibility in this regard.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan reiterated the government’s commitment to preserving the culture and heritage of aspirational districts like Dhenkanal and ensuring their holistic development under the vision of the double-engine government.
