New Delhi, 13 January (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Z-Morh Tunnel in the Sonamarg area of Jammu and Kashmir today, January 13.
This strategically significant project, located on the Srinagar-Sonamarg road, will play a crucial role in ensuring year-round road connectivity to the Ladakh region. The 12-km tunnel project, costing an estimated ₹2,700 crore, includes the main tunnel, an egress tunnel, and approach roads.
Situated at an altitude of over 8,650 feet above sea level, the tunnel will bypass landslide and avalanche routes and provide safer and uninterrupted access to Ladakh. It will also promote tourism by transforming Sonamarg into a year-round destination, boosting winter tourism and local livelihoods.
The Z-Morh Tunnel, along with the upcoming Zojila Tunnel, is expected to reduce route length and boost vehicle speed, providing better connectivity to important destinations in Ladakh. The project is a major milestone in enhancing defense logistics, driving economic growth and socio-cultural integration in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Completed in 2024 after nine years of construction, the Sonamarg Tunnel is set to have its official opening today.
