Kolkata, 13 January (H.S.): In a major development in the West Bengal school job scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has obtained call records that confirm the involvement of former minister Partha Chatterjee. According to sources, these call records reveal Chatterjee’s direct communication with his close aide Arpita Mukherjee and other key individuals involved in the scam.
It has also been revealed that Chatterjee and his associates tried to launder the ill-gotten money through real estate investments, showcasing it as legitimate business income. Earlier this month, the CBI received formal approval from West Bengal Governor Dr. C.V. Ananda Bose to file a chargesheet against Chatterjee, which is a mandatory step for the court to officially accept charges against a sitting member of the state Assembly.
With this approval, the path to frame charges against Chatterjee in the school job scam was cleared. Chatterjee was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in July 2022, after huge amounts of cash and gold were seized from the residences of his close aide, Arpita Mukherjee. Since then, Chatterjee has remained in custody at the Presidency Central Correctional Home in South Kolkata, while Mukherjee was recently granted conditional bail.
The CBI has also officially arrested Chatterjee in the same school job scam case, further complicating his chances of release from custody. So far, the Enforcement Directorate has confiscated assets worth Rs 239.26 crore in connection with this cash-for-school-job scam in West Bengal.
