Dhaka, January 15 (HS): Bangladesh High Court on Wednesday gave an important verdict regarding ULFA leader Paresh Barua. The court has reduced his life imprisonment sentence to 14 years. Earlier, the court had canceled his death sentence and converted it into life imprisonment.
An official of the Attorney General’s Bureau said on Wednesday that the Bangladesh High Court has reduced the life imprisonment period of ULFA leader Paresh Barua to 14 years in connection with the attempt to smuggle trucks full of weapons to the hideouts of the separatist group in Assam two decades ago. Along with this, the life imprisonment sentence of four Bangladeshis has been pardoned.
The High Court acquitted former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) state home minister Lutfuzzaman Babar and five others, who were sentenced to life imprisonment in the same case. The bench also declared the appeal of the other three accused exhausted as they had died.
Let us tell you that in April 2004, a truck full of weapons was seized, which were being transported to ULFA hideouts in Northeast India via Chittagong. The seized weapons included more than 27,000 grenades, 150 rocket launchers, more than 11 lakh ammunition, 1,100 sub machine guns and 11.41 million bullets. In the same case, the court had sentenced them to life imprisonment.
