A local court in Kolkata has found Sanjoy Roy, a civic police volunteer, guilty in the gruesome rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar hospital. The Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah convicted Roy under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita that deal with rape, murder, and causing death.
During his trial, Roy had claimed he was being framed, despite his initial confession to the crime. The case was investigated by the CBI following a High Court order amid allegations that the state government was trying to destroy evidence to shield the accused.
In a dramatic sentencing, Roy was brought to the crowded courtroom on Saturday afternoon amid tight security.
