Kolkata, 20 January (H.S.) : In a shocking turn of events, Sanjay, convicted in the RG Kar Hospital murder case, faces the possibility of a death sentence. On Saturday, Sealdah Court Judge Anirban Das declared Sanjay guilty and mentioned that the maximum punishment for this crime could be capital punishment. Executioner Mahadev Mallik, son of the renowned executioner Nata Mallik, expressed his readiness to carry out the hanging without hesitation if the order is passed.
Currently employed with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Mahadev Mallik stated in an interview, “If the government calls upon me, I will execute the sentence without any hesitation. My hands won’t tremble, nor will my heart. I have learned this from my father, and I can do it.”
Mahadev assisted his father during the 2004 hanging of Dhananjoy Chatterjee, which was the last execution carried out in West Bengal. He mentioned, “This is not a job everyone can do. If called, I will perform my duty.” Expressing his anger over the brutal murder of the doctor, Mahadev said, “Doctors are like Gods to us. They save lives. How can anyone kill such a person? There’s no room for mercy for people like Sanjay.”
He also questioned whether Sanjay acted alone, stating, “I don’t think Sanjay could have committed this crime alone. There might be others involved who haven’t been caught yet.” If the court sentences Sanjay to death on Monday, the punishment will not be immediate. He has the right to appeal the lower court’s decision in the High Court. Further appeals can be made to the Division Bench and the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court upholds the death sentence, Sanjay’s final hope will be a mercy petition to the President.
If the President reject the plea, Mahadev Mallik will be summoned to carry out the execution. Mahadev has affirmed that he is mentally and physically prepared for the task. The final verdict in the case will be delivered in Sealdah Court on Monday, and the entire state awaits the decision with bated breath.
