Kolkata, 20 January (H.S.): In the RG Kar Medical College case involving the rape and murder of a young doctor, the Sealdah court sentenced civic volunteer Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment. The court also directed the West Bengal government to provide ₹17 lakh as financial assistance to the victim’s family. However, the victim’s parents have refused to accept the aid.
Speaking outside the court, the parents stated, “We will not accept this assistance. We demand justice. This is not just about punishing Sanjay but holding the entire system accountable.”
Reacting to the verdict, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “We have demanded the death penalty from day one and continue to do so. If this case were under our jurisdiction, we would have resolved it much earlier.”
The court ruled that the case does not qualify as the “rarest of the rare,” opting for life imprisonment over capital punishment. Sanjay Roy, claiming innocence, said in court, “I have been falsely implicated. I did nothing wrong.”
