Delhi, 24 January (H.S.): On Thursday night, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto arrived in India for his first visit to the country as the head of state. He was welcomed at the airport by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and will be in Delhi to attend the 76th Republic Day celebrations as the chief guest.
The visit is expected to strengthen the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and will see the signing of several pacts to expand cooperation in various areas. This is not the first time an Indonesian president has attended India’s Republic Day celebrations, with Sukarno being the chief guest at the first celebrations in 1950.
The two countries have a long history of cultural and trade ties, and Indonesia is an important partner in India’s Act East Policy. In 2018, Prime Minister Modi visited Indonesia and elevated the bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and last year he met President Subianto on the sidelines of the G20 Summit. The volume of trade between India and Indonesia has been steadily increasing, with Indonesia being one of India’s largest trading partners in the ASEAN region.
