Delhi, 24 January (H.S.): Supreme Court on Friday deferred hearing on the petition seeking release of high profile murder convict Swami Shraddhanand alias Murali Manohar Mishra. A bench headed by Justice BR Gavai ordered the hearing after two weeks.
During the hearing, ASG KM Nataraj, appearing on behalf of the Centre, questioned the petition and said that the petition seeks directions to the President’s office for release. Therefore, he will have to take instructions from the Central Government. During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer said that Swami Shraddhanand is 85 years old and has been in jail for 31 years without any parole. During the earlier hearing, Swami Shraddhanand had told the Supreme Court that it is better to hang him than to be imprisoned till death. On this, the Supreme Court had asked whether you want your life imprisonment to be converted into a death sentence.
Shradhanand has been in judicial custody for 30 years on charges of murdering his wife. Shraddhanand’s wife was the granddaughter of the former Diwan of Mysore state. Shraddhanand has been sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his wife and burying the body in the house in greed for property worth Rs 600 crore.
