Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Thapaliya has proposed to reserve 33 percent seats for women in direct elections in a proposal sent to the Home Ministry. Thapaliya says that according to the constitutional provisions of Nepal, this proposal has been made to increase the participation of women of Nepal in direct politics. Although there are still 33 percent reserved seats in the Parliament. But this is fulfilled by proportional seats instead of direct elections. He said that this proposal has been made to bring women forward in the Parliament through direct election process instead of back door entry.
This proposal will first be passed by the Cabinet meeting on behalf of the Home Ministry. After that it is mandatory to pass it from both the houses of the Parliament. The commission believes that the Parliament should take a decision soon so that it can be implemented from the next elections. It is noteworthy that the Constitution of the country has ensured 33 percent reservation for women in both the houses of the Parliament. In the upper house, seats are directly reserved for women, but in the House of Representatives, the participation of women is fulfilled by maximum proportional seats.
