At least 17 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against various social media accounts for allegedly posting objectionable videos of women bathers at the Maha Kumbh since the festival began on January 13. According to Uttar Pradesh Police, these videos, which violate women’s privacy and dignity, were identified during social media monitoring on February 20. The police have been actively tracking such accounts and taking legal action against those responsible.
“We will ensure strict action against those involved in preparing and selling objectionable videos of women on social media,” said UP Director General of Police, Prashant Kumar.
Social Media Surveillance and Arrests
The police have already registered three FIRs against 17 social media account holders, with some arrests made. Officers are maintaining a round-the-clock vigil on social media platforms to prevent further violations. FIRs were previously lodged on February 17 and 19 at the Kotwali police station in the Mela area against specific accounts, including the Instagram account “@neha1224872024” and the Telegram channel “CCTV CHANNEL 11”.
Authorities have also reached out to Meta, the parent company of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, requesting details on the individuals operating these accounts. Once Meta provides the information, the accused will be arrested.
Ahmedabad Crime Branch Arrests Three Suspects
In a related case, the Ahmedabad crime branch arrested three individuals, Chandraprakash Phoolchand, a YouTuber from Prayagraj; Prajwal Ashok Teli from Latur, Maharashtra; and Praj Rajendra Patil from Sangli, Maharashtra—for uploading indecent videos of women bathing at the Maha Kumbh on YouTube. Shockingly, investigators revealed that these individuals were not only sharing but also selling these videos.
During the raid, police recovered laptops, microchips, and high-end mobile phones containing objectionable footage. It was discovered that the accused had been running this operation for nearly eight months, selling videos for prices ranging from ₹800 to ₹2,000 per clip. Further investigations are underway to determine the extent of their network.
