On Monday, at least one person was killed and several others injured following a group of miscreants launched an attack on the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) installation in Cox’s Bazar. The incident occurred at 11:30 AM. In a statement, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the public relations division of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, said that the sudden attack at the base in the Samiti Para area led to an escalation, leading to intervention by members of the Bangladesh Air Force.
About The Incident
The Air Force reportedly fired several rounds, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to at least six others. The statement read, “Some criminals from Samiti Para, adjacent to the Cox’s Bazar Air Force base, launched an attack on the Cox’s Bazar Air Force base. The Bangladesh Air Force is taking the necessary measures in this regard”.
ISPR Assistant Director Ayesha Siddiqua signed the release, which did not provide further details on the immediate actions taken. According to the media reports, the victim has been identified as 30-year-old local trader Shihab Kabir, who was killed during the firing.
The death was confirmed by Cox’s Bazar District Administrator Mohammad Salauddin and Sadar Hospital Police In-charge Saiful Islam. The reason behind the attack is still being discovered and an investigation is underway. Security has been heightened in the area to prevent further escalations.
The airbase plays a crucial role in national security. Additionally, the presence of Rohingya refugee camps and increasing geopolitical attention on Bangladesh’s coastal security have made Cox’s Bazar a strategic and vital base for defense activities.
