Japan’s birthrate crisis has reached alarming new lows, with projections suggesting that by the year 2720—just 695 years from now—the country could have just one child. Government data released Thursday revealed that only 720,988 babies were born in 2024, a 5% drop from 2023 and the lowest since records began in 1899. Meanwhile, deaths surged to 1.62 million, deepening Japan’s demographic decline.
The population, which peaked at 128.1 million in 2008, is on track to fall below 100 million by 2048. In contrast, South Korea reported a birthrate rebound in 2024, offering a stark comparison in Asia’s demographic struggles.
