Russia criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following his tense confrontation with US President and Vice President JD Vance at the White House on Friday. The verbal clash, which resulted in Zelenskyy’s abrupt exit from the Oval Office, has led to a wave of condemnation from Russian officials.
The confrontation between the US-Ukraine leadership occurred during a high-stakes diplomatic meeting at the White House. Trump and Vance sharply criticised Zelenskyy, accusing him of failing to show gratitude for US assistance in Ukraine’s ongoing war against Russia.
The heated exchange became serious when Trump told Zelenskyy that Ukraine would have been overrun by Russia without US support. Trump then warned Zelenskyy that he was “in no position to negotiate,” and that the US would pull its support unless Ukraine agreed to a peace deal
Trump told the Ukrainian President, “You don’t have the cards right now. You’re either going to make a deal or we’re out, and if we’re out, you’ll fight it out and I don’t think it’s going to be pretty”.
Furthermore, the Russian government quickly seized on the incident, with Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, started a scathing attack on Zelenskyy, accusing him of lying about Ukraine’s support during the war.
In her post on Telegram, Zakharova called Zelenskyy’ a “scumbag.”
