In his first major address to the Congress United States President Donald Trump said, “We are just getting started”. He set a record for the longest address to a joint session of Congress speaking for more than an hour and 40 minutes breaking the previous record set by President Bill Clinton, at 1 hour, 28 minutes and 49 seconds.
Donald Trump defended his harsh tariff policy, reiterating that the United States has been facing high tariffs from several countries across the world, including India. Trump said during his address, “If you don’t make your product in America under the Trump administration, you will pay a tariff, and in some cases, a rather large one. Other countries have used tariffs against us for decades and now it’s our turn to start using them against those other countries”.
Trump pointed out the high tariffs charged by India and other countries, including China and South Korea, and stated that the system is “not fair” to the United States. He announced that reciprocal tariffs would start on April 2, with the same tariffs imposed on imports from foreign countries as those imposed on US exports.
He said, “On April 2, reciprocal tariffs kick in, and whatever they tariff us, other countries, we will tariff them whatever they tax us, we will tax them”. However, the details of the reciprocal tariff remain unclear. Trump said that the US has been ripped off for decades by nearly every country on Earth. “We will not let that happen any longer.”
Starting Tuesday, imports from Mexico and Canada will be subject to a 25% tariff. The US has also imposed a 20% tariff on imports from China. US President said that tariffs are about making America rich and great again. “And it’s happening. And it will happen rather quickly.”
