Escalating the US-Canada tensions, on Wednesday US President Donald Trump accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of playing up a trade war to stay in power. This statement by Trump came after a “somewhat friendly” 50-minute phone call with Trudeau, amid the fallout from the imposition of tariffs by the US on Canada.
Furthermore, Trump said that Trudeau called him to ask “what could be done about tariffs,” and he informed the Canadian leader that his efforts to stop fentanyl smuggling were “not convincing.”
Trump also claimed that Trudeau was not able to answer his question about the Canadian election. Following that, Trump accused him of trying to use this issue to stay in power and wished him ‘Good luck’ on his Truth social media account.
As per a report by AFP, a Canadian source confirmed that both leaders spoke for about 50 minutes and discussed fentanyl smuggling as well as trade. An expected discussion between both nations is expected on Wednesday. Adding that US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Vice President JD Vance were also on the call.
