In one of the worst outbreaks of unrest since Syria’s transitional government took power, more than 200 people have been killed in the ongoing clashes between the Syrian government security officials and supporters of deposed ruler Bashar al-Assad, as reported by the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Notably, in addition to around 140 killed in apparent revenge attacks in the villages, the number of dead includes approximately 50 of Syrian government forces and 45 loyalists of Assad. The civil war in Syria since March 2011 has left more than half a million people dead and millions displaced.
According to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the most recent clash began when government officers tried to arrest a wanted individual near the city of Jableh on Thursday and were ambushed by Assad’s supporters.
